Achieving accurate Tempo-Sync between different sequencing devices depends on four separate but closely related issues - Tempo/Event Jitter, External Start Lag, Internal Quantize-Grid Offset and Internal Audio Grid to Outgoing Sync Offset.

Slave Sync External Start Lag is the time it takes for any hardware sequencing device (or software sequencing application) to respond to External Sync and begin playback.

Internal Grid Offset: Many sequencers and drum machines let you to program and sequence different types of events within the same device. An MPC-3000 is a both a sampling drum sequencer and a sophisticated Midi Event Sequencer. The Elektron Analog Four allows for sequencing of internal synths sounds and Analogue Gates and Triggers. In theory these different sequenced events are locked to the same internal quantize grid but there are many examples where this is not the case.

Internal Audio Grid to Outgoing Sync Offset: Connecting two Tempo-Synchronized devices together seems a fairly simple exercise - choose your Master and Slave and press play but this is not the whole story. At first you might assume that the outgoing Midi Clock (or Din Sync) from your Master Device is firmly locked to its own internal audio/event quantize grid. This is almost never the case. Knowing how far in front or behind the internal audio/event grid your external sync sits is critical in achieving accurate tempo sync between devices.
